This pretty in pink layout uses lots of pattern papers all with some pink in them. The Sunburst comes out from a large circle in the lower right corner for a nice offset to the design. I spotted this idea on the Scrappy Guy Scrapbook.com Gallery.
Whether you call it a Sunburst, Starburst or Rays this pattern is a popular one for scrapbook layout backgrounds. It’s a terrific way to add lots of pattern, color and movement to your pages. You can fill the entire background or just a section. It’s also a good way to use up scrap strips of pattern papers and cardstock. These designs can be drawn, stitched, cut by hand or die cut. I’ve gathered a great group of scrapbook layouts featuring Sunbursts to help give you some ideas and inspire you to give this technique a try and add it to some of your layouts.

This digital layout has just a few rays across the top that add interest and help pull the color scheme together. I came across the page on Lidia G.’s gallery at Pickleberry Pop.
Wow, check out all the detail on this amazing layout from Eva! She used a think strip die to cut lots of strips from pattern paper and created a burst of rays behind a wavy open cut die. The photos and embellishments in the center help pull the eye right to the middle. Visit the Pinkfresh Studio blog for more info.
This beautiful page features traditional rays come out behind the circle round photo which is easy to create with a die. But they also are extended outward with leaves and botanicals in a rainbow of matching colors. This is such a unique layout design! I saw this page on the Scattered Confetti gallery at Scrapbook.com.
These pre-printed ray paper gave Lisa the perfect place to write out her journaling in her Traveler’s Notebook. This is a simple but very impactful way to incorporate journaling into a layout. You could even replicate this look by hand drawing the rays with a ruler and pen if you don’t have printed paper. Learn more at Studio Calico.
This amazing layout uses a digital die cut that has been stitched along the edge of the pattern paper rays. But over the cardstock ray sections thread and sequins have been strung as well. Again, the center circle of rays is off set for even more interest. Visit the Paige Taylor Evans blog for all the details.
This sunny layout capture the joys of summer with flowers, rainbows and lots of pretty pattern papers. Notice how Mandy pulled colors from the photo and used papers and embellishments that coordinated. She explains her process over on the Cocoa Vanilla blog.
On this stunning design Valeska created rays from white pattern paper over striped black pattern paper. On each white ray she added watercolor and flowers each in a different color scheme to create a rainbow around the center photos. Learn more on the 49th and Market blog.
I love how the sunburst on this design covers both pages! In one of the ray section there’s journaling and a date in another, the opposite page has the photo and title with some embellishments over the rays. Visit the Scrapbook and Cards Today blog to learn more.
This cool layout has a large sunburst background created with Distress Oxide inks and a stencil. The title and all the embellishments look like they are swirling around the center photo giving this design terrific movement and wonderful bold colors! I spotted this layout on the snap.scrap.repeat Instagram page.
This summer travel page has white rays over a blue sky with a sun and clouds. Most of the “weight” of the design however in on the bottom with the photo, lots of embellishments and the title, so the sunburst is more of a background player in the design. Visit the Hip Kit Club blog for a closer look.
This fantastic Adventures layout is the perfect example of a how to use up thin scraps of pattern paper. Very thin strips create the detailed sunburst that covers the top half of the page design. But notice how all that pattern still doesn’t detract from the large photo in the center. I came across this page on Tisa Browne’s Scrapbook.com Gallery.
I hope these scrapbook layout have brought a burst of joy into your day and have inspired you to give Sunburst backgrounds a try!
