When I was about 6 or 7, I had got it in my head to run away from home. My Mother, being the astute and ever loving being that she is, told me that she would miss me terribly and offered to help me pack my suitcase. While we were packing, she told me about Hansel and Gretel and the breadcrumbs they left so that they could always find their way home. She warned me about the dangers of the world and how to question things if something seems to good to be true….like a candy laden house in the middle of the forest. After an hour or so, my Mother invited me to one last dinner and a bedtime story before I got on my way. I think I fell asleep in her bed that night. Besides the whole talking to strangers thing, I remembered how important it is to leave yourself a breadcrumb trail if you ever have any hope of getting back home because quite frankly, the scenery starts looking the same and as time passes, the once clear details seem to fade.
As a matter of my everyday existence, I recognize the fact that I need to leave myself breadcrumbs….lists of this or that, notes jotted down on random scraps of paper, and ideas written in haste in my Moleskine. Scrapbooking is a way to leave yourself breadcrumbs as well- not just for yourself mind you, but for generations to come. When we document our journey and our memories, we leave clues about who we are and what we think about behind for others to find and even for ourselves to rediscover when we somehow lose our way. Think about the trail you are leaving….does it lead back home?
