Backpacks

August 20, 2008 by sarah hodsdon

Back to school is always hard for me. My kids went back to school on Monday and I think we are “almost” back into our routine….. okay, who am I kidding here, if routine is flying by the seat of my pants then, I guess I am being truthful.

Today’s post concentrates on Backpacks. My children try their best to smuggle everything- including the kitchen sink (full of plastic dishes and other doll house sundries) into their classroom via their backpacks. They literally carry their world on their backs and leave all the “non-essentials” (homework, books and supplies mainly) at home…. homework and “sign this and return it” papers are a small sacrifice to have room for a Transformer or complete tea set I suppose….*sigh*

Isn’t it interesting how many folks grow up and still insist on carrying around things on their backs…things that they feel compelled to lug around and allow to weigh them down? It really gets me thinking about all the things I allow to weigh me down that get in the way of the “good stuff”….from experiencing life and getting to the making of amazing memories.

I always find it fascinating that folks show up to class so over burdened with “stuff” that they spend their time pawing through their stash of supplies searching for things instead of documenting the important moments. Much like my kids who have their treasures waiting in the hallway outside their classrooms hanging in their backpacks, they concentrate not on the amazing things they are learning and experiencing but rather, dwell on the stuff they already have and know and are comfortable with. Your time is too precious to squander. Make it a point to greet everyday with a backpack full of extra room for all those unexpected discoveries!

This Backpack (from Daily Window) has a really cool spot for you to showcase your memories and an amazing canvas for you to spread your creativity (this one was created by the ever talented Vivian Garrigues)!
